Asda Equal Pay Case

Equal Pay

Asda is again making headlines in its Equal Pay claim case. To first bring you up to speed, thousands of Asda employees have claimed that they have been discriminated against by doing comparable work (work of equal value) as their predominately male warehouse workers based in distribution centres.

Historically store workers (who are mostly women) have been paid less than their male warehouse workers by up to £3 per hour. The case began in 2014 and has successfully gone through Employment Tribunal with an outcome that Asda store workers were comparable to staff at their distribution centres – therefore Asda must pay the difference.

Asda appealed the outcome and today (31.01.2019) the court of appeal confirmed store workers roles continue to remain comparable to its male workers based in distribution centres. Asda are estimated to lose millions of pounds of back dated pay going back as far as six years’ worth to all of its store workers as well as ex-employees. This ruling will also affect the other supermarkets such as Morrisons, Sainsbury, Tescos.

Asda now consider to appeal further to the supreme court. We continue to watch this case.
