What is ACAS Code of Practice?

The Advisory, Conciliation and Arbitration Service (ACAS) has created the ACAS code of practice - guidelines for key areas of employment practice. The ACAS code of practice has been approved by parliament and is referred to by employment tribunals.

The ACAS Code of Practice for Employers

The ACAS code of practice includes:

  • Discipline and grievance
    Provides practical guidance and sets out basic requirements of fairness on disciplinary and grievance procedures in the workplace.
  • Disclosure of information to trade unions
    Contains guidance on the information to be disclosed by employers to trade union representatives to promote the improvement of industrial relations.
  • Time off for trade union duties and activities
    Guidance on the time off to be permitted by an employer to trade union officials
  • Settlement agreements
    Designed to help employers, employees and their representatives understand the implications of employment rights in the negotiation of settlement agreements
  • Requests to work flexibly
    To help employers deal with written requests made by employees to change their working hours or place of work (flexible working).
