Hot Topic Alert! - Is a four day working week without a pay cut the future?

24 February 2023 | Jatinder Tara

What is the question: Is a four day working week without a pay cut the future?

So what is happening?

Currently a number of businesses are undergoing a trial of a 4-day working week with no loss of pay and it appears that the majority of these businesses may consider continuing with the arrangement after the trial.

Also, Peter Dowd a Labour MP has suggested to parliament in his private members’ bill of a working week be capped at 32 hours with overtime rate paid at time and a half after 32 hours worked.

What is the risk/threat?

It is unlikely that the above private bill will be passed thus the current maximum working week of 48 hours under Working Time Regulations will still apply.

But the MP has stated that “All the evidence shows a four-day week with no loss of pay would be good for the economy, good for workers and good for the environment.".

What you need to do:

Review policies over working arrangements so as to determine if such a change would be feasible now or in the future as recently South Cambridgeshire District Council became the first UK local authority to move ahead with a four-day week pilot with no pay cut.
