HR gets real and moves to the fore

Being involved with HR for many years has certain advantages, like, a level of confidence that comes with growing competence. This comes from exposure to multiple situations. But the real advantage of advancing years in human resource is understanding what a business needs from its HR and delivering it.

When first starting my HR journey more than 20 years ago, the ‘personnel function’ often told the business what it could expect from its support function, rigid and often seen as a barrier to business innovation and ultimately success.

Today, divisions are far too often tarred with the same brush that was used 20 years ago. When speaking to business owners and leaders today, I mention that I work in human resource. You can immediately see them tense up and their teeth appear to start itching!

However, today, as businesses have had to evolve to compete, HR has also had to change. Gone are the days from the typical “you can’t do that”.  It is now “what do you want to achieve?” and “how can we make that happen?”

HR should drive your business with you

Your HR team should be leading your business with you, from the front. With a high level of commercial understanding, linking the HR strategy to the business strategy. Thus, also enabling the business to achieve its goals.

In the modern business world, where every commercial advantage counts, HR should above all else, drive your business with you and understand the critical and flexible part that it plays.

This could be with flexible resource models that suit the changing requirements of a business.  Leading through effective performance management strategies to maximise talent.  Or to identify cost savings by analysing the P&L and implementing those plans. Or creating compliant and commercial exit plans for those employees who no longer fit the organisation.

Ultimately gone are the days of the tears and tissues personnel team, HR has just got real and should be leading your business to be the best it can be.
