World Cancer Day is 4th February 2021

29 January 2021 | Eleanor Greenwell

World cancer day falls on 4th February 2021.  All countries will observe this day to raise awareness about this deadly disease which can develop at any time and in any part of the body destroying healthy organs.

NHS

The primary purpose of this day is to educate all on early detection, prevention, and treatment.  There are many different types of cancers, such as breast, bowel, lung and prostate. NHS statistics show that 1 out of 2 people at some stage will develop cancer.

Millions of people are affected by this disease and it is important that we all understand the impact that it has on a persons’ personal life.  It is not only mentally challenging but also very physically demanding.

Under the Equality Act 2010, cancer is classed as a disability.  No employer can treat disabled employees less favourably than another within the workplace as this would be discrimination.

Employers have a duty of care to support employees with cancer.  They are legally bound to follow GP’s recommendations on how to best handle the situation.   If not correctly handled, the employee has the right to make an employment tribunal claim under disability which could cost the company thousands of pounds as payment is uncapped.

This day is a good opportunity for employers to encourage staff to understand cancer and to get themselves checked or follow NHS guidelines on how to check for abnormal cells.  Thanks to leading charities such as Macmillan, leading scientists continue to research and develop life changing medication to eradicate this disease.

Employers should communicate ‘World cancer day’ through their internal communications and should any employee need any further help and support to contact their direct manager.
