How to engage with staff working remotely?

09 March 2021 | Shabir Karatella

The COVID pandemic continues and during the lockdown a substantial number of employees continue to work from home. Whilst this may have business advantages, the emotional needs of employees can be overlooked. Employees are an organisations most valuable and income-earning asset so it is important to keep them informed, kept involved and made to feel that they still belong. Although physical contact may not be possible, tools such as Zoom, Teams and Skype can be used to great effect.

How to engage with staff working remotely?

Check in on your staff regularly. Regular joint video meeting with your staff can work wonders. It demonstrates that staff have not been forgotten and gives everyone the opportunity to see other colleagues, it allows employers to plan a work schedule and to monitor progress – so everyone knows what is expected of them. It will also allow staff some light relief from their tasks by exchanging banter with colleagues. This will relieve some of the frustrations of working from home – improving performance.

Arrange virtual tea breaks, lunches, or quizzes. Such breaks will allow the employer to gauge the general mood and health of the staff. You can judge this by their demeanour, voice, mood and involvement. Also, employees are more likely to be open and frank during “off time” to discuss work matters over a cup of tea/coffee. As human contact has disappeared, employees will be craving the opportunity to speak to their colleagues. Not only does this allow contact with colleagues, but it will also relieve some of their tension of being away from friends, colleagues and sources of help.

Training

Offer online training. With a vast volume of internet-based knowledge, webcasts and podcasts, the miracle of technology allows employers to offer online training to remote workers. Whilst at home, they are likely to be more relaxed and comfortable, and the training is more likely to be effective. Again, the act of offering training will be a positive act in itself, but the training may lead to personal development leading to personal and business efficiencies.

Remember, your staff are your most valuable asset. Keep them involved, keep them informed, keep them valued and keep them motivated.
