The Cyber Essentials Scheme is designed by the government and industry to help UK organisations with limited experience of cyber security to improve defences.
The scheme recognises fundamental technical security controls that a business needs to have in place to defend themselves against cyber-attacks and the most common internet-base threats which are considered to be the following:
- Hacking – manipulating weaknesses within internet connected devices using a range of widely available techniques and tools
- Phishing – manipulating a user into downloading and installing a dangerous application
- Password guessing
The scheme focuses on 5 key controls that are put into place:
- Internet Gateways and Firewalls
- Secure Configuration
- Access controls
- Virus and Malware Protection
- Patch Management
The scheme also provides scope for organisations to protect the privacy, integrity and accessibility of the information stored on devices which are internet connected such as Desktop’s, PC’s, Laptops, Tablets, Smartphones and other devices.
An increase in cyber-attacks
Around a third of businesses reported having received a cyber-attack in the last 12 months. Cyber security has become an increased priority issue for companies within the UK. 78% of businesses now rate it as high priority.
